Little painter

I just now submitted my last five photos to Day in the Life of Asheville. Yes, it took me four days to come up with 16 decent photos out of over 700 frames. And yes, more than 1/2 of my shots are of children.

Damn, do I find judging my own photos difficult. Almost as difficult as judging my own writing. But I have editors for the paid stuff, at least.

This has been the most exciting DITLOA ever as the participation has more than doubled! We have more than 50 fotogs submitting, and almost 10 hours remain until the submission deadline.

There are some amazing shots here. If you don’t have time to check them all out, I’ll have a link to the judge’s choices next week. Because there are over 800 submitted photos to wade through.

Thanks to all who participated and all who are watching and supporting our creativity. Wow!!!

The first part of Day in the Life of Asheville (DITLOA) is done–the shooting part. And boy are my legs tired.

Folks are starting to choose and upload their shots. To check them out so far, go here.

The Citizen-Times pulled a few that were uploaded by yesterday afternoon for a photo gallery here.

Here’s my slideshow so far. I’ve only submitted four of these shots to the final pool. Choosing my best shots is the most difficult part of the process for me. So I need feedback. Tell me which ones you like and why. Thanks!

Over dinner last night, we brainstormed possible team names for the girls’ softball team.

Any idea how to explain that the Asheville Beavers is not an appropriate name for a team of 8 to 10-year-old girls?

Turns out the boy came up with the most creative monikers, including my favorite, The Fearless Chihuahuas.

My girl likes the name the Asheville Rodents, though she wisely realizes that her teammates might not like it. She’s one of the only 9-year-old girls I know who has a soft spot for rodents. Luckily, our two cats and one dog are reason enough to prevent us from adopting one.

Other team name possibilities are the Cubbies, the Tsunamis, and the Snakes. Like most pre-adolescent girls, they seem torn between being cute and being tough.

I’ll let you know the final name decision after tonight’s scrimmage.

This weekend is all about photography and softball for me–and photos of softball (yes, Day in the Life of Asheville has arrived–or this time, 36 hours in the LOA).

Oh, and tomorrow’s Earth Day. See you at MLK, Jr. park. I’ll be the tired one with the camera and the grumpy kids.

UPDATE: The team went with the North Asheville Cubbies.

All chocolate cake

Finally, I’m getting photo uploads to work consistently! Hurrah! This is an out take from a shoot I did recently at French Broad Chocolate Lounge. Pictured is their “Quintessential” Chocolate Cake. I have yet to taste it. I have, however, orgasmically downed a couple cups of their liquid truffles: 4 ounces of melted chocolate ganache with added spices. The cayenne/cinnamon sipping chocolate rocks my world.

It crept up on us quickly, but this week is DILOA!

This time we’re letting fotogs pick their 24 hour period in which to shoot. As zen says, “Your day might not be my day.” But you only have until Sunday, October 7, to pick a day, shoot, and submit up to 24 photos to our Flickr site.

Any and all fotogs are welcome to submit. The only requirement is that you upload your shots (digital or film) to the Flickr site by Wednesday, October 10. You may pick your one best shot, your “Photographer’s Choice” shot, and it will be included in the final group regardless of outside judging.

We’re still working on the judging part. To check out the Inaugural DILOA photo finalists, go here (there are some meet-up shots mixed in–so you can see what some of us look like!).

We’re looking for quality shots that represent the life of our town. So clean your equipment, check your calendar to see which 24-hour period works best for you, and GO!

Oops, and I forgot to mention that prints of all photos submitted will be given to the Asheville Library for their North Carolina collection, so you must agree to share your shots.

This Saturday, September 8, is our planning meeting for the Fall edition of “Day in the Life of Asheville.” We’ll meet at 4:00 at Asheville Brewing Company on Coxe Avenue to hash out the details.

For more information, visit our Flickr site and check out the photos from the spring DILOA event.

Hey all. Ashvegas in the house. Yes, the hound dog has arrived, and we’re here to spice things up a little.

There’s been a decided dearth of dare here of late. Looking at the past posts, we thought this blog had been renamed “Drudgery Mama” or something. Sheesh.

So let’s get right to it. This past weekend, a photographer named Spencer Tunick got a couple thousand people to pose nekkid in the Netherlands so he could take photos. He specializes in this kinda thing - getting a bunch of crazy white people together to pose naked in the town square. Who signs up for that sort of thing - baring your nether regions for all to see? And where can I sign up for this dude’s job?

Here’s a little blurb:

Dozens of women posed naked on their bicycles on a bridge over one of Amsterdam’s historic canals Sunday - a unique sight even in a city famed for its relaxed attitude toward nudity and sex.
They were among 2,000 men and women who participated in a series of four nude group photos in the city in the early hours of the morning as part of the latest project of U.S. photographer Spencer Tunick.
The first and largest composition was in a decidedly prosaic location: a parking garage on the outer ring of the city.
But what the location lacked in romance, it made up for in style. Participants lined the railings of the garage’s twin circular towers, creating a pattern of multicolor stripes against the white building and an overcast sky.
The women on bikes were selected from the larger group and posed with their chins pointed triumphantly upward toward the sky.
Other compositions included a group of men posing together near the parking garage and a mixed group of men and women on another bridge.

Here is the Yahoo linky

We know we’re going to get in trouble from Edgy for posting the little photo, but c’mon, we’re posting this in the name of news. In the name of art and photography. Ok, in the name of nekkid boobies. But lighten up out there, Edgy. It’s why we’re called Ashvegas.
