So, last night I was working, yes, working, at the New French Bar, photographing a speed dating session for an article I’m writing. I was talking to a woman near the front plate glass window and she suddenly stopped in mid-sentence and stared out the window. Then she said, “There’s a guy out there with a mask carrying a gun.”

I look and see a guy standing across the street, in front of Mast General Store, wearing a silver metallic jumpsuit and a helmet-type mask covered in aluminum foil, pointing a large gun up the street. As my adrenaline starts pumping, I realize he has what looked like a microphone in one hand. And he was singing or rapping or saying something while doing this stylized dance that included pointing the gun, which I think was a large water gun, at people as they walked by.

Just as I was changing my lens to go take a photo of this nutcase, the cops pulled up. The idiot pointed the gun at the cop car. The cops backed up the street, and suddenly, there were cops everywhere, with big rifles, yelling at the guy. Needless to say, the cops were pissed at Raygun guy’s shenanigans. They carted him off pretty quickly.

The film, Anywhere, USA, has been chosen as a Sundance 2008 official selection in dramatic competition!

What, you might ask, is Anywhere, USA, and why should I care? This is the film formerly known as asheville the movie, which has been a three-year(?) labor of love by director Chusy Jardine and his lovely wife, Jennifer MacDonald.

And I have a cameo in the film as a waitress (unless I’ve been cut, which is possible). Many, many folks you know and will recognize appear in this film and many, many more locations around town will be evident (my scenes were shot at Table Restaurant downtown).

The Sundance Film Festival takes place in Park City, Utah, from January 17-28, 2008.

I’ll be following the festivities closely and hoping for occasional updates from Chusy and company.

Congrats! I’m thrilled for all of you!

Daddy goat, originally uploaded by edgygrrrl.

This goat and his herd are owned by some friends of ours who live outside of Canton. They live on the side of a mountain and have rocking views of the back of Pisgah. Do you think the goats appreciate the views?

Several of us are starting to load Day in the Life of Asheville shots. I’m loading a bunch to my Flickr site first, then I’ll decide which ones to submit to DILOA. Want to help? You can go leave comments on the ones you like here.

It crept up on us quickly, but this week is DILOA!

This time we’re letting fotogs pick their 24 hour period in which to shoot. As zen says, “Your day might not be my day.” But you only have until Sunday, October 7, to pick a day, shoot, and submit up to 24 photos to our Flickr site.

Any and all fotogs are welcome to submit. The only requirement is that you upload your shots (digital or film) to the Flickr site by Wednesday, October 10. You may pick your one best shot, your “Photographer’s Choice” shot, and it will be included in the final group regardless of outside judging.

We’re still working on the judging part. To check out the Inaugural DILOA photo finalists, go here (there are some meet-up shots mixed in–so you can see what some of us look like!).

We’re looking for quality shots that represent the life of our town. So clean your equipment, check your calendar to see which 24-hour period works best for you, and GO!

Oops, and I forgot to mention that prints of all photos submitted will be given to the Asheville Library for their North Carolina collection, so you must agree to share your shots.

Have a beautiful weekend! And if you’re in Ashvegas, go visit the butterfly exhibit at the WNC Nature Center. Gorgeous!

I’ve been totally caught up in posting photos for Day in the Life of Ashvegas. Here’s my slideshow. Here’s the photo group of everyone’s shots. Amazing, really, what a cool, talented, dedicated group of folks can capture in one short day.

My joy in my friends and this town has been sadly overshadowed by the horrendous event at Virginia Tech today. Our hearts ache…
