I don’t listen to or watch or read anything about politics in the week before an election. Because, regardless of whose team you’re on, both teams are full of s**t in this last week. Basically, everyone’s nasty and no one’s thinking logically anymore. Everyone is freaking out.
Including elementary-school-aged kids. My fourth grader came home from school on Friday and told her brother that some fifth graders had told her that if McCain wins the election, he’s going to make all the kids go to private or charter schools, and “poor” public schools like Isaac Dickson Elementary won’t get any money and will have to close down.
See? Even kids are making stuff up.
I explained to her that McCain is a proponent of No Child Left Behind, which is a program that could hurt Dickson, because it’s a stupid plan that doesn’t work. I also explained that McCain is a proponent of HeadStart, which is a good plan that seems to work well in starting kids on the right learning track.
I also told her that regardless of who wins, I don’t think her elementary school is going to close down. But damn…
In other news, Halloween was pretty low-key here. I got a flu shot yesterday and had a reaction to it (it’s happened before–I was sick for three days after gettingĀ a Typhoid shot before a trip to SE Asia).
And I’m trying to pull together some of what inspires me as a journalist and a writer for this exhibit at this party, which you’re all invited to (although pasting the invite in wrecked my formatting, so I’ll add in again tomorrow!).
