What are you?
I found this Thanksgiving dinner calorie counter intriguing. Turns out that I’ll need to walk about 19 miles to burn off what I’m planning to eat. And I typically don’t eat dessert.
Happy turkey day!
In this week’s column, I write about toys parents hate…and their kids love. This is the list to peruse if you want payback.
I love Thanksgiving–a holiday where the only requirements are eating good food, drinking good alcohol, and being thankful for your blessings. It’s my kind of holiday.
This year, we’ll be celebrating on Saturday instead of Thursday with the rest of America. Because Enviro-spouse will be in Copenhagen, and Europeans don’t care about Thanksgiving. Funny, that.
But I’m looking forward to hanging with the kids on the actual day. We’re going to have a super-pajama junk food day to celebrate. And hope no one barfs afterwards
What are y’all doing for Thanksgiving? Any good recipes?
Here’s my favorite family recipe:
Cranberries & Apples:
2 cups raw cranberries (wash & pick over)
3 cups chopped green apples with peel
1 cup sugar
Mix above together in 2 quart casserole
Topping:
1/2 cup chopped pecans
3/4 stick melted butter
1 cup oatmeal
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 t. cinnamon
Mix topping ingredients together and put on top of the cranberry-apple mixture.
Cook at 350 for 40 minutes until bubbly around edges.
Use instead of cranberry sauce.
In this week’s column for Mountain Xpress, I express relief–and write a bit about some of the kids who have lived in the White House over the past 150 years.
Happy Monday!
My favorite local seasonal of the year–Highland’s Cold Mountain Ale–is being bottled this week and should be on local store shelves next Monday or Tuesday. Hurrah!
In celebration, I pulled out a bottle of last year’s nectar and refrigerated it to help me through the next several days of single parenting. Even though I’m trying to diet, which means cutting out beer and sugar. Sugar’s easy to cut out. Beer? Not so much.
Which is easier for you to go without and why?
Does anyone else feel like going to bed at 7:30? I love the brighter mornings after the fall time change, but damn, nights are difficult. My kids have been passing out at 7:30, and I’ve been tempted to follow soon after. They’ve also been “starving” at 5:15. We’re all off-kilter. And it’s pitch-dark at 5:30. I sent them outside tonight to play, then realized, when I heard the screeching, that they’d run into the hickory tree. It was that dark!
This week my column’s about getting the family vaccinated against the flu. Not very funny, but informative, I hope.
Also, I forgot to share this fun article I wrote last week on “Cooking with Tea.” Turns out you can use tea leaves to impart a unique flavor to whatever you’re cooking. Who knew?
Still feeling extremely relieved that last week turned out the way it did. And that it’s over. You?
