A number of folks noticed this afternoon that both the Manifest Obama video (I posted it last week here) and website had disappeared. I’d received a nice note about the video from Lauren Rosenfeld, one of its creators (see comments), so I e-mailed Lauren and her husband, James, to find out what happened.
Here’s their response:
Anne,
Thank you so much for your kind support of Manifest Obama. We took it down because it was no longer serving its intended purpose of watering the seeds of peace and positive focus amongst supporters.
We were at 23,000 views around dinnertime last night, and things had been going well - lots of very nice, very positive feedback from supporters. But then we started noticing a huge spike in traffic (an additional 20,000 views by this morning) and experienced an overwhelming number of very troubled & troubling comments, both on the video and on outside blogs. When we learned this morning that Glenn Beck had mentioned the project in a negative light on his show, we realized that we were catalyzing & provoking exactly the opposite of what we wanted. So we pulled the plug swiftly.
Though it was perhaps a disappointing ending, we feel the project served its purpose. Everything is impermanent! :) We were so happy and grateful for your comments and other comments from similar supporters. We will all continue to stay positive and proactive, continue to focus on bringing peace & prosperity to everyone in this nation & the world. We will continue to recognize and transform the suffering we see around us, even & especially in those who disagree with us. We will continue to work towards the day when Obama, an exceptional and inspiring leader, takes the oath of office. Thank you for all your support!!
Many blessings,
James & Lauren
Thank you, James and Lauren, for providing hope in a positive manner. As I mention in my post below, I often attract haters as well, and I know how icky it feels. At least on this blog, I can moderate comments and refuse to post anything that I think is rude, bitter, inappropriate, or worse. I guess y’all had no such recourse on YouTube, which is unfortunate. I think, regardless of controversy, you’ve got to keep putting your truth out there. Perhaps we’ll get to see the Manifest Obama video back up on November 5th.
Thanks for this news and thanks to James and Lauren for their inspiring work.
One vote for keeping it going. It’s all about what we focus on. For me that was the point. When a message disseminates into the wide world there will always be flak, particularly if it is accomplishing something. Should President-to-be Obama withdraw because of the flak aimed at him?
I miss the video because I was using it to facilitate my visualization, so beautiful. But of course I can do that for myself. Everything is impermanent.
Thanks again to all. -DtG
Thank you for posting the explanation. I was so disappointed today to find the video gone. We will continue to enact positive visions of President Obama daily (many times a day).
President Barack Obama!!!
Beck should have just stayed in his substance abuse re-hab center. Would have done the world a big favor.
Brian, in the comments below the video, said he found a copy on-line, though I’ve had no such luck. If anyone does find a copy, send me the link?
Hi Anne.
Thanks, first of all, for the support. And thanks to the many people who have already written to us saying how much they already miss the site and the video. In addition to all the reasons James gave you in his letter, there are some other reasons as well:
Some of our dear friends are in that video. So are a good number of kind-hearted, fun-loving individuals from the Obama rally at AHS –that we don’t know at all — but who gracefully agreed to be in the video because they were excited about Obama becoming our next president. We don’t want any of them in any way impacted by the recent torrent of negative words, accusations, and energy that they had no part in creating. It feels very wrong to me that good people who were out at a rally, waiting in line, enjoying the sun, feeling hopeful and happy and ready to support their candidate are now being maligned as “cult members.” Perhaps I was naive not to see it coming, but we just don’t want that to go on and gain momentum, and we don’t want people to get angry and combative in defense of us. As James said, we don’t want to water those seeds. What can I say: I’m a mom. I feel protective and responsible . . .
The ironic thing is: how a site we created to encourage people to refrain from negative attacks and focus on the positive, could end up drawing so many negative attacks. And just this afternoon I read a blog post from an Obama supporter who commented that we are “lame” for pulling the site. I honestly wish we could turn a corner as a culture and take the energy we pour into name calling and finger-pointing and to ask one another — in the spirit of compassion (as you did, and I appreciate that very much): “Why?” How can we ever know the heart of another — from the person we love most dearly to the one we consider to be our enemy — unless we begin in earnest to ask this question?
As you know, I am a teacher. I have been spending the last month studying the wise words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu with my class. Desmond Tutu has spent the better part of his life seeking reconciliation and offering forgiveness for unthinkable crimes. Here is a quote we studied recently that I find deeply meaningful in the wake of this eye-opening episode:
“It is unity we are talking about, not uniformity. What is needed is to respect one another’s points of view and not to impute unworthy motives to one another or to seek to impugn the integrity of one another. Our maturity will be judged by how well we are able to agree to disagree and yet continue to love one another and to cherish one another and seek the greater good of the other.”
And this morning, we read this simple formula from the Archbishop:
“If I diminish you, I diminish myself.”
It’s something for all of us to think about; to aspire to.
In gratitude for what you do,
Lauren
Hi Anne — Was over at the Ashevegas blog
http://ashvegas.squarespace.com/
and saw the post on Manifest Obama and why it was pulled which is how I ended up here.
The negative energy directed at that project is now, unfortunately, something I can relate to.
I’ve got a teambuilding blog and newsletter list of 38,000. I created a new site for those in the team and leadership industry to share why they support Obama:
http://www.teambuildersforobama.com
Sent the invite out to my list and received both positive and negative responses (far more negative).
Like other commenters I find it amazing when people invest so much time and energy into what they DON”T like (don’t want).
I love the quote from Desmond Tutu above. I can relate.
Tom
Why delete negative comments? I say keep them. I love negative comments at my blog. Sometimes they help me learn something, other times they are just fun to read.
Thanks again to Lauren and her co-creators for giving the words such potency. Now we can say it with gratitude and awe at what has become manifest: PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!
