Southerners know how to tailgate

Don’t read this if you’re hungry.

My mom forwarded me an e-mail yesterday from her sis, my Aunt Sally, about this weekend’s tailgate party which will precede the Georgia-Auburn football game in Athens, Ga.

Aunt Sally and her hubby met and married each other like 50 years ago when she was a cheerleader and he was (not) a football player for the Georgia Bulldogs (or Dawgs, as us grads like to call ‘em).

For almost 50 years, they and their family and friends have been steadfast Georgia fans, attending 99 percent of home games and a good number of away games. They have a prime parking spot, right next to the stadium, and their pre-game tailgates are true Southern feasts.

I got many a date in college who wanted to take me to the football game because they knew that first we’d get fed hard at Aunt Sally’s tailgate. In grad school, I rarely actually attended the games, but I always went to the tailgates. The only “balanced” meal I ate some weeks was out of Aunt Sally and Uncle Huel’s trunk.

Anyway, here’s the PARTIAL list of what Aunt Sally and her friends are bringing to this weekend’s tailgate party, per the e-mail:

BBQ butts, buns and sauce, BLT dip, artichoke dip, cheese straws, stuffed mushrooms with sausage, pasta salad, deviled eggs, chocolate-dipped strawberries, Mexican layered dip, olive tray, lemon squares, pecan bars, Petit Fours, pimento cheese, pimento cheese sandwiches, chocolate cake squares, caramel squares with icing, toasted pecans, cheese dip, milk punch, grapes, apples and caramel, pepper jelly, chicken salad sandwiches, 100 Zaxby chicken strips, salsa, guacamole and bean Dip, Hello Dolly bars, orange blossoms, ham, large tray of chicken nuggets from Chick fil A, chicken salad, cheese wafers, water, drinks, beer and ice in coolers…..and Buh’s fried chicken !!! (with bone in as he and Sonny like it that way–no nuggets for them).

Buh and Sonny would be, respectively, my uncle and first cousin.

Make your mouth water? I might have to make the drive to Athens this weekend. Although I think I gained five pounds just reading this list. Anyone else wanna visit Southern tailgate heaven?

Yes, I should have waited until after lunch to read this! I think it would be worth the gas money to join in the pregame party.

But Aunt Sally, the story is so much more iconic if Uncle Huel was a footballer. Oh well…

And I gave you ten years!

    It’s BBQ butts, JA.

    Pass the pimento cheese, please.

    EM:

    Butt. Butts.

Once the meat is in the bun(s), everything else is academic.

    Cheers,

OMG! I think I may have died and gone to Southern Food Heaven (it’s much larger there than Polish Food Heaven where my grandma would be dishing out pierogis and kielbasa). I’m going to plan a trip for next football season just for the buffet!
Is there anything better than pimento cheese? I don’t think so…unless, maybe pecan bars…or deviled eggs…or…
    Thanks for sharing, EM.

You are so right about milk punch, anony!

    Here’s my recipe:
    2 oz brandy
    1 cup milk
    1 tsp powdered sugar
    nutmeg

Shake brandy, milk, and powdered sugar with ice and strain into a collins glass. Sprinkle nutmeg on top and serve.
