Since everyone else is talking about it, I figured I’d throw my opinion into the ring.
So Jo Rowling announces that Dumbledore is gay, which explains a lot about the Grindelwald story, which I found a bit confusing.
My guess is that Rowling has always known that DD was homosexual, but she just forgot to mention it. Either she thought it’d be obvious to the reader, or she just didn’t realize that she hadn’t explicitly mentioned it in the 1,000s of pages that make up the seven books of the Harry Potter series.
That said, I’m sad that this will give the crazies more ammunition against the books. Witches and hexes and homos….oh my!
What do y’all think?
BTW, What the Hell? has a much more thoughtful analysis of DD’s sexuality from her unique Pixie Dyke pov.

Well! I just only found out that Gandalf from LotR was gay! Well, ok, Ian McKellen anyway. Still, i’m one of the Straight-but-not-narrow types who rarely has his gaydar functioning properly.
BTW, you can get in trouble with your sister-in-law if you assume that everyone who drives a Lesbaru is gay, so don’t go there!
I wasn’t shocked. I was like, okay, and this matters why?
What’s there to get worked up about? Clearly he did whatever he did out of the way and kept what happened in his bedroom, well, in there.
He did a good job as Headmaster. It didn’t affect his ability to do his job.
So I say, again, what’s the big deal and why is all of the literate free world in a hubbub about this?
JK Rowling needs to let the books stand for themselves. The way she keeps talking about what happened to such-and-such afterward and why certain characters were the way they were just feels…well, random.
As for this revelation about Dumbledore, I rolled my eyes when I heard it. It’s simply another reason for the uber-conservatives to despise a wonderful series of books that have turned so many kids on to reading.
Remember when Bert and Ernie were outed?
I think Jo Rowling enjoys drama and this is a great way to stir some up! The hyper-conservatives will go on another book burning frenzy. And like they say, “There’s no such thing as bad publicity!”
It’s definitely interesting that she made the greatest wizard of all time and the headmaster of Hogwarts gay. It’s bound to turn some people’s worlds upside down. Which is probably want she wants…
Edgy: …and Tinky Winky and SpongeBob, too!
zen, I used to drive a Lesbaru! But I had two babies in the back so no cute girls tried to pick me up.
Yes, Dianne. Maybe Jo’s bored with answering the same old questions about the books.
I was wondering if the dudes who played DD in the movie knew he was gay. Would it matter in how they played the part?
Who are some other gay literary characters in kid/ya books?
I have assumed Slughorn was gay, but hadn’t thought about D.
Dumbledore’s Sexual Orientation = Publicity Stunt
I mean, it’s great that he’s gay and all, but I think the esteemed Ms. Rowling missed being the center of the attention…
