Save the World…Ride a Bike

That seems to be the simplistic side of the message Rep. Blumenauer touted at last night’s enviro-politico get-together. He wore this adorable bike pin on his label, which he gave to Heath Shuler in a misty moment.

Heathbar still loves me, despite my feisty words on CNN. So, let’s get this race won, boy. I’m not in the mood to have my heart broken. Damn, I’m ready for this election to be over.

Blumenauer, in pumping up the party faithful, claims that the Dems could win up to 20 seats in this election (we need 15 to win the majority). All I know is that the Repubs always vote, so in order for the Dems to be in the majority again, we’re gonna have to get out the vote in a HUGE way.

MoveOn.org is helping tremendously, and now that they have an Ashvegas office, the phone banks are hopping. They are persistence personified. In the past few days, they’ve sent me get-out-the-vote e-mails from Stephen King, Al Gore, and Barack Obama (these were national appeals). I tried to e-mail the King back, but to no avail.

So, I guess we’ll be discussing politics some over the next few weeks–interspered with regular edgy programming.

BTW, the Google/Blogger merger is spazzing out our blogs. What’s up with that? What’s up with several hours of maintenance in the middle of the day yesterday? If you wanna mess with our bloggies, do it in the middle of the night, like the road construction crews, kay?

I hope everyone let your get out the vote message sink in. Unfortunately you’re preaching to the choir. I work outside of Ashevegas in the rural regions almost weekly and I can tell you that I rarely come across anyone who would consider voting outside the Right slate. For every bike promoting letter in the MountainX, there are 1,000 of the silent majority out there for whom turning out to vote is not a question, and they really don’t care about bikes, not dislike bikes per se, just don’t care. I am a pro-choice independent so I’m not really interested in either congressional candidate and will vote for neither.

I give you this rambling comment for one reason, you have silent crippling numbers to overcome. I encourage your readers to truly get out the vote, don’t count on a Stephen King voice mail to do it. I remember being friends with one of Brownie’s workers back when Brownie didn’t win. This person had a breakdown after one of the losses and we had to stay up all night discussing and drinking away the problem. (BTW, we didn’t drink away the problem, he sold his house and moved his family away over this incident because he felt he’d been “had” by the liberal presentation of Ashevegas. I guess he played and didn’t win). The observation then was that for every disgruntled trustafarian downtown, there were ten perfectly silent dedicated voters in West Asheville who were going to bury a progressive candidate.
The majority of my friends are A’vegas progressives. I really hate it when they lose an election because the depression and hostility are intense. The right wing is extremely well organized and they spend election day filling their cars with voters for their cause. Readers of Anne, please offend your bretheren by forcing them and helping them to vote. It will not be done with a sound bite.

I tried to e-mail Obama back, but to no avail. The rest of political life here in Illinois is shady, snarky and not much changed from the days of Al Capone as far as I can tell. I’m still registered in Michiganso voted absentee but feeling slightly out of my usual political loop. But maybe a light on the horizon, yes?
Keep fighting the good fight, AF.

I missed you on the telly, went out for my birthday dinner instead. :-) But come to BlogHer in Chicago and we can chat about TV makeup and I’ll show you my shiney new Specialized bicycle that I ride everywhere.
