The Jolie-Pitts

Today a judge in sunny LA granted Angelina Jolie’s wish to have her children’s surnames legally changed from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt. Which sounds to me like a fancy French bathroom.

Why didn’t Brad Pitt change his surname to something a bit more interesting twenty years ago? He could have been Brad Pittsburgh or Brad Pitstop or Brad Pitroleum. And, if they marry, will he take the surname Jolie-Pitt as well? Maybe it is an improvement over the spit-inducing monosyllable he’s currently graced with.

So let’s get the timeline straight. A year ago this month, Pitt was vacationing on a tropical beach with his wife, Jennifer. Upon their return home, they announced that they were separating. Rumors swirled that the breakup was because of Pitt’s interest in Jolie. Then Pitt and Jolie began traveling the world together, doing good deeds, including visiting Ethiopia so Jolie could pick up her second adopted child. In October, Pitt’s divorce was finalized.

Now Pitt is adopting Jolie’s adopted children, and, ta-dum, forget rescuing another cute ethnic baby, let’s have our own. Judging from Angie’s bump, she’s at least four months along. Which means, omigosh, how did we celebrate the impending divorce, kids? By pulling the goalie, perhaps?

Ah, to be young, fertile, rich and in love.

Interesting. As hip as Hollywood couples seem, I don’t know of any who have hyphenated their last names together. What’s up with that? Oh wait, they don’t expect to stay married that long, so what’s the point?

I wonder if Brad’s parents ever considered naming him Arm?

But seriously, that is gonna be like the *hottest* kid ever. I’m just sayin…..

You know how I decide the “do I switch my name” bit…or how I have decided it at least? “Do I like my husband to be’s last name better than mine? If yes, then change. If no, then keep.” The hyphenated crap seems too confusing for me. But then again, I don’t think I should HAVE to switch to my husband’s last name. I mean, really…the only parent one can ever be sure about is the mother. We can SEE the baby come out between her legs. But the father? No matter what the momma says, it still could be the milkman. I don’t know why we don’t pass on the WOMAN’S surname instead of the man’s. It just is more logical.

Yes, Kira, the Spanish do it that way (pass on the Mother’s surname). It makes much more sense.

I’m all for keeping your name of origin. I kept mine, but tagged E-spouse’s on the end. So legally, I have four fricking names. But now I’m moving back to the “maiden” name (I hate that word. As if I was a 33-year-old maiden when I married). I’ve always written under that name, and now I find myself introducing myself more often than not using what I think of as my “real” name.

Yeah, Lu, the baby will be beautiful, but much too young for you ;).

You’re right, Walker. I didn’t go there, but I’m willing to start laying bets on longevity (or lack thereof).

    Welcome Stringman!

Instead of “maiden,” I keep saying “my original family name,” but no one has any clue what I’m talking about! I think some hyphens work well (as in Rio-Anderson!), but I have heard some others that are just crazy - but who cares? And you know how I love Angie - read my blog entry from late last summer - I wish I could go around the world adopting lots of children who need homes. Not that I necessarily want to take up with a man who maybe? was just separated from his wife - not really my style. I try not to have an opinion on these Hollywood break-ups and hook-ups, but I can’t help but hope Brangelina will make it (if for no other reason than the kids’ names!) (And I think I am finally over Jen dumping Vartan for Affleck.)

I loved the hockey reference. I’ll have to remember that one.

The whole thing annoys the piss out of me… and I will NEVER be over Garner dumping Vartan. There’s just no excuse or comparison… He (Vartan, of course) is perfectly dreamy. I’ll have to add to my Patrick Dempsey Mondays…

It took me a minute to get the goalie line, but I did. Clever.

I think AJ is gorgeous, and I love JA, but I think long-term AJ would be more interesting to be with. I like easy going, but give me wild and crazy any day.
