Coincidence…or Fate?

We’ve all had seredipitous moments–moments when things align in a way that could be coincidental…or could be fate.

Here are a couple from my life:

  • I went backpacking through Europe with a friend for part of one summer during college. We were walking in Munich, down a random side street, when someone literally squealed in my ear while tackling me from behind. It turned out to be one of my best friends from college. Neither of us had known the other was in Europe, much less a random side street in Munich.
  • Just out of college, I procured my first real job at the school in Atlanta that I attended. I was Publications Coordinator, Yearbook Advisor and English teacher (independent schools and nonprofits will milk you for everything they can). I started dating another young English teacher, and, on one of our first dates, he took me to a basketball game at a local college to watch his younger brother play. That younger brother now owns and manages the coffee shop in Asheville where I do 90 percent of my writing. Weird, hun?

What are some serendipitous/coincidental/fateful moments from your life?

Not as exciting but rather weird. I went with some friends to thier son’s little league game and recognized on of the dads. He had been on the School Board when I help lead a huge protest/movement during my high school years. I think that he agreed with the students so I think I liked him but it was weird to see him there watching little league and is no longer on the school board and now I work at a school.

A friend and I were waiting for the light to change at a crosswalk in front of Lincoln Center after an opera when a car pulled up for the red light and the passenger rolled the window down and called her name. It was a neighbor of hers that she’d been trying to call for a few days…suddenly…there they were!

At a function here in my town in New Hampshire recently a man shook my hand and I realized it was someone I had gone to 6th grade with in Massachusetts 49 years ago.

I’ve had a lot of little things happen, and I truly believe its all fate. Those are incredible things that happened to you! Who would have thought you’d meet someone you knew in Europe?! Fate is so cool!

When I was 29 I went to the county fair and dropped my name in every little fishbowl drawing. 6 weeks later I answered the phone and this guy said he was from the radio station and he had been trying and trying to find me to give me the bicycle I won in a drawing. When I was 52 (2.5 years ago) this guy was telling me on our first date that before he became a professor and a consultant he had worked for a local radio station doing the morning rush hour show. Then he said he had been trying to find me for years. We celebrate our 2nd anniversary next month.

That is strange huh? If someone tackled me on some side street anywhere I would freak out and scream. :)

My wife and I were looking to get a German Shepherd puppy. While sitting in my office, doing much of nothing, a friend of my office-mate happened to pop his head in the door to say, “Hi.” During their conversation he mentioned that his dog had puppies over the weekend. I butted into the conversation to ask what kind. “German Shepherds,” he says. So four weeks later, I picked up not one, but two cute puppies for a really great price. They are now almost six months old and the joy of our little family.

I was on the metro in Paris, 2 years after my high school graduation. At one of the stops, a woman from my little Okie high school, a year younger than me, got on the same car with her tour group, who were all lost. Neither of us could believe it. I haven’t run into her since high school graduation before or since that time. Dang, it was weird.

Speaking of backpacking, anyone know what happened to Backpack Earth? I was getting ready to book my entire trip and the site is half down it looks way different. Anyone?

i had the most monumental “crush” on this guy that I barely knew from one of my college classes… Well, one day i was thinking about him constantly. i couldn’t get him out of my head and i was hoping to see him, but knew that i wouldn’t see him for a while. i was running errands that day and suddenly decided i wanted to get a cup of coffee, so i drove to a coffee shop that i RARELY go to. When i walked in the coffee shop, he was the first person i laid eyes on. He was sitting directly in my line of vision. This was tremendously astonishing because prior to this incident i had NEVER run into him outside of class and i barely ever go to that shop. i was mysteriously led there that day. PS- now i coincidentally run into him ALL THE TIME. it is mind boggling. what does it all mean? (haha - of course it means nothing to him though because i gather that he does not like me.)
