Having a child of each gender is fascinating. Enviro-spouse and I think of ourselves as politically correct, gender fluid parents–even so, I’ve come to believe that hormones are POWERFUL agents.
This has been brought home to me with specific strength as a lifelong friend of mine is currently undergoing gender reassignment. She knows, better than most, what hormones do–physically, emotionally, and in totality. After all, she was saddled with testosterone for 36 years and now is having to re-endure adolescence under the influence of estrogen–something that not many folks get to experience.
Today, a couple of young boys from our ‘hood gave a fort to my kids that they had built out of cardboard boxes. My offspring ate lunch in the fort and played in it for over an hour while I did yardwork (heaven!). Then the threat of rain enduced us to bring the new playtoy inside. In the process, it split into separate large boxes. My daughter promptly claimed one box, moved it into the dining room, set it up with pillows, stuffed animals, and Legos, and called it home. My son, on the other hand, spent TWO hours shredding and ripping the other box to pieces–by hand. He was so bent on destruction that he refused dinner until every bit of cardboard and tape had been reduced to confetti. Our living room looked like someone had smashed a giant pinata and then turned on a wind fan (especially since a layer of toys had been flung around the room before the box dissection started).
Since birth, my son has been a destroyer–a sweet, gentle little guy who just wants to tear things apart. Is this normal? Is it testosterone? And most importantly, what will happen as his hormone levels increase?

If my experience is relevant I advise you not to leave a loaded caulk gun anywhere in the vicinity. And then he’ll set fires. To “pill bug rockets” made with tampax tubes and cotton and sow bugs.
She will wait. And right when you’ve been seduced into thinking she’s your charm, she’ll turn on you. 360 degrees, like Linda Blair. And that’s what hormones can do to the growing child. And they still turned out beautifully!
Speaking of beautiful- YOU are a charm to come by and post such a nice comment as I sit quivering in the trench. Thanks!
You are in for many surprises is all I have to say, some you will like, others you will not!! lol!
I love it when my 5yo girl and 7yo boy play together. She has a Barbie who is trying to talk to his Bionicle who is set on ripping Barbie apart limb by limb. Makes the game very interesting indeed.
Edgy Mama,
I get such a kick out of your google ads- offering tasers for $399. Ha!
Baby is sweet and loves to tear newspapers apart. Sometimes if he is freaking out I let him play with a newspaper and he has so much fun ripping it apart. Maybe for him it is like bubble wrap for me. It is so much fun to pop the bubbles. I could amuse myself for a long time that way.
Oh, we guys only get worse - too bad he is too old for transformers - when I was growing up the antagonist transformer was Destructocon - he was awesome!
What kind of destructive toys do they have for little boys these days? What is the hot item?
My little brother liked to take things apart as a kid. This talent developed into mechanical talents, which in turn, landed him a very nice job.
Buy him models, kits, or tools. Anything that will encourage this. Who knows? Maybe one day he’ll come up with an awesome, yet simple idead, like E=MC2?
When my son was only a few weeks old we had one of those little aquariums that hang on the crib to make noise and stuff to help him sleep. Anyway, when it stopped working, my wife hit it with her had and he just laughed and laughed. Shoulda known then that boys love to do damge.
I’ve spent 11 years looking at my little boy thinking, “What on earth?!” And the longer I’m married… I like to call it the y chromosone difficency.
I’ve already started a mobile of mother board pieces from the various electronics of ours that he’s broken (CD player, 2 VCRs, car tape desk)!
I’ve been off-line all day and missed the taser ad, dang it!
I’ve taught children for a long, long time. At age four, the girls play in the kitchen corner and cook. The boys take the plastic green peppers from the kitchen corner and toss them across the room as hand grenades.
So that’s how demolition experts start out…with cardboard! This reminded me of the little boy I once babysat. His parents were very PC and his mother abhorred guns so he was denied all knowledge of such things. One morning he picked up a stick outside and was ecstatic… “Look at my ’shooter’” he proclaimed and proceeded to line up everything in sight for a potential aim with his ’shooter.’ It was instinctive. The next thing you know, he arrived with a squirt gun. Oh thanks… The dog was undecided whether this was a curse or a blessing. ~;^)
Saw the taser ad–it’s all Chad’s fault (see Eddo, not everything is your fault!).
I’m in Atlanta for a few days, so reading blogs will be spotty–sorry to neglect y’all. I’ll be back on full force next Tuesday.
